Land Use Terms

Permit requirements and stipulations effective July 1, 2019. Please contact us for more information

  1. This permit is issued only for the period indicated and allows temporary use only. No interest in Choggiung land is conveyed or established by this permit.
  2. No permit is transferable and may not be shared, rented, leased, assigned, or in any way encumbered.
  3. This permit is for a single camp of no more than the number of people listed on this permit. Additional permits may be required for larger groups.
  4. This permit is for individual private use. Commercial "for-profit" activities will require a commercial permit.
  5. Choggiung Ltd. retains the right to deny, revoke, or limit any permit at any time with or without cause, at the discretion of management, and without any recourse upon Choggiung Ltd. or subsidiary corporations.
  6. Permittee assumes all responsibility, risk, and liability for all activities of the permittee and group members directly or indirectly conducted in conjunction with this permit. Permittee shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Choggiung Ltd., its employees, and agents from and against any and all suits, claims, actions, losses, costs, penalties, and damages of any kind, including all attorney fees and litigation costs in connection with permittee and group members.
  7. Campsites will be occupied on a first-come, first-served basis.
  8. The permit holder is responsible for cleanup of the campsite used. All garbage will be removed from the campsite. Burying garbage is prohibited.
  9. When no sanitation facility is available, all greywater and human or pet waste must be disposed of in an 8–10" cat hole located at least 200 feet from the ordinary high-water mark of the nearest waterbody or marsh and back-filled prior to leaving.
  10. All improvements must be removed, and the site returned to its original condition at the end of the permit period. Monuments, markers, or other signs will not be disturbed.
  11. Motor vehicle use is limited and not allowed in certain areas on Choggiung land. Check with management before using motor vehicles off-road.
  12. Fires will be contained. Campfires must be in a pit and no more than three feet in diameter with flames no more than two feet high. Burn bans mandated by state and local government must be followed.
  13. Timber that is dead and/or down is available for firewood. No cutting of live trees or clear cutting is allowed.
  14. Use of firearms on-site will be limited to that necessary for protection or lawful hunting.
  15. Uses under this permit shall not interfere with subsistence fishing, berry picking, or other subsistence activities.
  16. Fuel and storage of other hazardous materials shall be conducted according to the Department of Conservation requirements. Fuel and other hazardous materials shall not be stored below the surface. In no event shall waste fuel or other hazardous material disposal be permissible.
  17. Alteration of a permit or misrepresentation of permit information will be grounds for revocation and future denial.

Camping is not allowed in the following courtesy zones: within 100' of Portage Creek Village, within 100' of the area known as Blood Beach, within 100' of the water source located south of Portage Creek, and other places that are posted "No Trespassing" and in any areas determined to be historical sites, sensitive habitat, or significant in other ways. A courtesy zone of approximately 300' is recommended between neighboring camps. A section for private camps is reserved approximately two miles above Portage Creek. Camps in this area may remain in place for an extended period of time as long as they appear to be occupied or used on a regular basis.

This permit must be presented to any law enforcement personnel, Public Safety personnel, VPSO, or Choggiung Ltd. employee upon request.
